From Alas, A Blog the author has posted about yet another piece of stupid legislation attempting to limit access to ART procedures like IUI and IVF. Oh, and Julie from a Little Pregnant is on this story as well. This time it comes from my former home state if Indiana, and is apparently titled the "Unauthorized Reproduction Law". Basically, this law will attempt to introduce screening criteria for those Hoosiers using ART to have a family, and even more sinister it will limit access to ART to those who are married. Single and hoping to parent through ART even though Mr. Right hasn't dropped into your lap yet? Tough luck responds the state of Indiana. Gay and in a committed relationship, and hoping to start that family together like you've always dreamed of? Absolutely not allowed under this statute either. This statute does seem to be the result of some homophobic leanings (in Indiana? Never...), which is disgusting enough, but it also starts down that slippery slope of restricting ART procedures bit by bit so that the entire industry could eventually become regulated by a bunch of clueless legislators who have zero medical credentials or any concept of what it's like to be infertile.
Please spread the word about this piece of legislation, and if you reside in Indiana please contact your State Representative to make your opposition known.
